My journey into the world of wine began in December 2007 when my husband and I were visiting Turin, Italy for his work’s Christmas party. While there his Italian friend offered to take us wine tasting in the neighboring Langhe region. Without a hesitation we embarked on an adventure that would change our lives forever.
Our wine tasting adventure began around mid-morning and lasted well into the evening. There was a light dusting of snow covering the vineyards, which made our trip all the more special.
We found ourselves traveling through winding hillsides that were filled with vineyards. Throughout the day we tasted Barolo, Barbaresco, and Barbera wines, all of which were phenomenal. Additionally, we tried Grappa, which is a distilled pomace brandy from Italy. The wine tasting experience was one of a kind. In each tasting room, we were offered a rather large tasting and a piece of parmesan cheese, which really enhanced the flavor of the wine. This was my first experience of pairing wine with food and it has stuck with me ever since.
I have never been a big drinker; however, I’m passionate about wine. How can this be? Rarely do you see me with a glass in my hand unless it’s accompanied by food. Simply stated, I don’t enjoy the wine experience unless food is involved. I only have a glass or two in one sitting and rarely do I drink during the work week. Guzzling glass after glass of wine clouds my ability to properly appreciate not only the flavors of the wine and food but also the social experience of who I’m drinking with. Often, I find that a glass of wine tastes differently depending upon whose company I’m in and the food it’s paired with it.
For me, truly indulging in wine is not quantifiable in terms of number of glasses consumed, but rather it’s a holistic experience. So if you were to ask me what my perfect pairing would be. Quite simply, I would respond with the cliche, “Good wine, good food, good friends, good times!’ because it’s so true!!
